Arcade shooter for whole family
Ladies and Gentlemen come and see Barlows Dread Machine! Grand gaming automaton working on springs, cogs, and electricity. This automaton leads you to the tracks of morbid conspiracy. Our hero is an unnamed federal agent, who uncovers the anarcho-satanists (yep! that's what is said here) plot to kidnap president Roosevelt! Additionally, this game is well suitable for both the parent and child.

Currently, on Early Access, the game surprises with its humoristic take on the arcade shooter genre.
In short, the game is all about dressing digital game as a mechanical one. Before the dawn of digital gaming, mechanical arcades did exist but didn't go this far. The controls of the game emulate the rail-driven character as your character can move only along the rails. T-turns require player to make turn at the right spot. Meanwhile, player is greeted with hordes of mechanical zombie-figures appearing from every direction.
The game reacts smoothly to controls and while the perspective is behind, the shooting is pretty accurate. At times the game changes the view to be directly up, meaning that zombies can approach from any side. The hectic action feels a bit like Tesla vs. Lovecraft had a baby with Undertale. Some bullet hell influences mean hectic and cute action game, that has been written in the blink of an eye.
The levels do not let the player get bored. On the course of six worlds player is challenged by any way imaginable. The Player gets to drive and shoot, avoid obstacles, and run away from the fire. Between the levels, the challenge is offered with boss battles, which provide lots of targets to shoot, but not more mechanics than shoot and stay alive.
Game is through and through arcade shooter with bullet hell and puzzle elements. Once in while the player is challenged to make trick shots to turn switches. The economical gameplay means that eliminated enemies drop dollars, which need to be collected quickly before they vanish. A new jacket, hat, or pants make the man (or woman) and provide bonuses for the gameplay.
The player can find four unlockable characters for the co-op mode. Later versions of the Early Access probably provide more content. So far the story stops and at least the last two worlds are not published yet. The game is smooth and I didn't find any bugs. Only the mining level frustrated because I had to dodge the big insta-killing Lovecraft-themed worm. I knew what to do but had to try repeatedly because of small mistakes.
Perspective of the ratings?
The game has acquired it's PEGI 7-rating rightly. PEGI rates arcade action more lightly than other action games. Distancing is the term I often use to describe the elements that distance the player from the topic. The player is playing the mechanical game and nothing that happens on the screen cannot be mistaken with the real world. There are civilians who can be saved, but if player accidentally shoots one, the game doesn't discipline him. After all they do look like cardboard characters falling down like targets on the range. Saved civilians produce a bit of money. The logic of PEGI used to be that age rating is penalized by the intention and not the depiction of the story (Like chrysalids attacking civilians in X-Com), but it seems that distancing is so good that they relaxed the rule.
Game is marketed directly to families, as it is child friendly and has a co-op mode. This mode is noticeable as both players can have their own difficulty levels. This has a direct effect on player health so even the slowest of parents can join the game. Keyboard and mouse allow the player to use crosshair so even those parents not fluent with this kind of game can probably manage well.
I recruited Oscar to test with me and he thought well of games humor and style. However, we noticed that person who is not seasoned with the Xbox-controller, could easilly miss due perspective difference between the stick and the screen. Two stick-combination is something you need to learn by heart. However the keyboard and mouse combination worked well as it provides clear crosshair for the action.
During the play you can talk about...
- Name things that are funny in this game.
- What is the plot?
- What kind of mechanical games exist before the digital age? Know any of them?
